Looking for Miss Dance Team Nationals? This national championship dance team solo category requires pre-qualification at one of our regional affiliate qualifying competitions. Inspired by the legacy of dance competition industry inventor Dr. Kay Teer Crawford, this solo competition category is our most rigorous and rewarding scholarship award opportunity.

PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY

Competing dancer must be age 16-19 years of age by December 31st of the current academic school year AND a current member of their school dance program. Our registration software locks dancers into the age eligibility requirement, allowing us to ensure that dancers are allocated into the age-appropriate title division at our national championship event.

Each of our affiliated qualifying competitions selects dancers to represent their U.S. state using a variety of scoring criteria (varies by event). For a listing of current affiliated qualifying events, please click here.

State finalists come together at our Dance Team World National Title in Las Vegas, where they compete for the Miss Dance Team solo championship title and accompanying scholarship awards. At Nationals, dancers registered in this category are evaluated in two rounds of competition as described below.

PRELIMINARY ROUND

Leadership Panel (10% of score)
Dancers meet in small groups for a 5-minute open discussion with our judges on subjects related to their experience as members of the high school dance team community. While this scored element is weighted the least in terms of overall combined score, it is the most important and consequential. Our panel of judges use these scores to determine a variety of scholarship award recommendations (which are presented at our scholarship awards program dinner during Nationals).

Skills Spotlight (20% of score)
Dancers have 45 seconds to perform a compulsory format in a star-shaped pattern that showcases their personal areas of strength. This demonstration must not contain

Dance Routine (70% of score)
Dancers perform a dance routine in style of movement.

Combined scores from each of the above 3 elements determine our finalists, who will advance to the Finals.

The final round takes place during The Main Event (our closing show at Dance Team Nationals in Las Vegas). Approximately 10-20 finalists will re-compete in the dance routine element. Afterwards, half the dancers from this group advance to the Skills Spotlight element. Again, half the dancers from this group are cut
