Inside Miss Drill Utah: The Premier Solo Dance Event for High School Dancers in Utah

If you haven’t yet heard of Miss Drill Utah, get ready to discover one of the most prestigious and high-energy solo dance competitions in the state. The year I attended it was held at the stunning Mountain Ridge High School in Herriman, Utah. This annual event brings together nearly 180 of Utah’s most talented high school dance drill soloists for an unforgettable day of competition, artistry, and community.

As part of the Miss Dance Drill Team USA family, Miss Drill Utah has a legacy that stretches back to 1976. It’s not just a competition — it’s a rite of passage for many dancers on school-based dance drill teams across the state. And this year’s event did not disappoint.

A Spectacular Venue

From the moment I walked into Mountain Ridge High School, the atmosphere was electric. The front lobby proudly displays memorabilia and photos from past competitions, setting the tone for a day full of excitement. The real showstopper, however, is the Performing Arts Theater — a state-of-the-art venue that gives every dancer the spotlight they deserve.

What Makes Miss Drill Utah So Special?

Miss Drill Utah is exclusively for soloists who are active members of their high school’s dance drill team. The competition features two age-based divisions, each going through a preliminary and final round.

In the preliminary round, dancers perform their choreographed solo routines based on style and class. Finalists are then selected and announced in an exciting awards ceremony.

But it doesn’t stop there. The final round is truly what sets Miss Drill Utah apart:

  1. Spotlight Showcase: Dancers perform without music to highlight their versatility and additional skills.
  2. Industry Question: Finalists respond to a thought-provoking question from the judges — for example, “If you could perform for an influential person, who would it be and why?”
  3. Re-Performance: Dancers perform their solo routines again for final evaluation.

The finals also feature a college dance team showcase with performances from some of Utah’s top university dance programs — many of whom include former Miss Drill Utah finalists!

A Launchpad to Nationals

Winning at Miss Drill Utah means more than just a trophy — it’s a launchpad to the Miss Dance Drill Team USA National Championships in California. Finalists and solo champions earn qualifying bids to compete on the national stage.

While we won’t be sharing videos of the winning routines just yet (no spoilers before Nationals!), trust us when we say these dancers are next-level.

Honoring the Legacy

A huge shoutout goes to contest directors Lauralyn Kofford and Nikki Ames, who have carried the torch from founder Jackie Fulmer. Their leadership, passion, and vision have helped turn Miss Drill Utah into the premier solo dance title event in the state.

I was honored to attend, film behind the scenes, and even guest judge the Teen Miss Drill Utah category. From the energy in the hallway to the emotion on stage, every moment was packed with inspiration.

Final Verdict?

Five stars. All the way.

Whether you’re a dancer, coach, judge, or simply a fan of the artistry that lives in high school dance, Miss Drill Team Utah is a must-see, must-experience, must-remember event.
